CM Maryam Nawaz Launches Free Wi-Fi Service in Gujranwala
Over 25,000 residents expected to benefit from free internet in the city’s busiest areas
The Punjab government has rolled out its “CM Maryam Nawaz Free Wi-Fi” project in Gujranwala, giving thousands of citizens access to free internet in the city’s most crowded public spots. This move follows the successful implementation of the same initiative in Lahore and Kasur.
Free Internet at Key Locations
The service has been made available at five central points in Gujranwala, including:
Model Town Chowk
Ghanta Ghar Chowk
Jinnah Stadium
Peoples Colony
Gujranwala Railway Station
These locations were chosen for their heavy public footfall, ensuring that students, workers, travelers, and business owners can all benefit.
A Digital Step Forward
Speaking about the launch, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said the initiative is aimed at bridging the digital gap and making internet connectivity accessible to every citizen, especially students and job seekers.
She revealed that in the first four weeks alone, users in Gujranwala have already consumed over 250 GB of free data, while more than 25,000 citizens are expected to take advantage of the facility in the coming months.
“This project is not just about free internet; it is about giving people opportunities — whether it’s online education, job applications, freelancing, or staying connected with loved ones,” the CM added.
Success in Lahore and Kasur
The government highlighted the popularity of the service in Lahore, where over 5 million citizens have already availed the facility. Following this response, authorities have been instructed to expand free Wi-Fi access to 250 more points across Lahore.
In Kasur, the service is currently active at 10 Safe City points, with plans underway to expand it to 20 more locations.
Gujranwala to Join Safe Cities Network
The CM further announced that Gujranwala is also being included in the Punjab Safe Cities Authority network, along with Rawalpindi and Faisalabad. By the end of the year, Safe City projects are expected to be operational in 18 major cities of Punjab, offering advanced digital services, surveillance, and security systems.
Local Reaction
The people of Gujranwala have welcomed the initiative, calling it a much-needed step for a rapidly growing city. Students say it will help them attend online classes and download study material without worrying about mobile data costs. Local shopkeepers and traders believe that free internet in commercial hubs will attract more visitors and encourage digital business activity.
A Vision of Digital Punjab
Officials explained that the Free Wi-Fi initiative is part of CM Maryam Nawaz’s broader plan to digitize Punjab, improve e-governance, and provide citizens with affordable and accessible internet services. Future expansions in Gujranwala are expected to cover universities, hospitals, and transport terminals.
